Futanari
Futanari (ふたなり, seldom: 二形, 双形, literally: dual form; 二成, 双成, literally: '[to be of] two kinds') is the Japanese word for hermaphroditism, which is also used in a broader sense for androgyny.
Beyond Japan, the term has come to be used to describe a commonly pornographic genre of eroge, manga, and hentai, which includes characters that show primary sexual characteristics from both females and males. It refers almost exclusively to characters who have a female or overall feminine body, but have both female and male primary genitalia.
The term is also often abbreviated as futa(s), which is also used as a generalized term for the works themselves.
Futanari play a central role in Bible Black, where their appearance is mostly tied to the occult and influences of the Devil. Prominent futa characters include the adult Reika Kitami and Jody Crowley.

Appearance and mechanics
In Bible Black, all futa characters manifest themselves with the ability to grow a large phallus from their clitoris. This makes somewhat biological sense, since both organs develop from the same tissues. The penis emerges in a fully erect state, with the foreskin pulled back and revealing the head. No scrotum appears, the organ instead forming a sort of hybrid of both vulva and shaft. The vagina remains fully functional and can still be penetrated.
Growing and retracting the phallus is seemingly controlled at will, although it might be induced or even forced by stimulating the clitoris, as seen in Jody Crowley's encounter with Yuki Toudou and later Imari/Kitami in the New Testament series. Though futanari are also able to suppress the phallus from appearing despite being stimulated, as Kitami can be seen doing when having sex with Minase and Yamanishi.
The refractory period for futanari seems to be very short. Kitami for example is able to orgasm at least five times in quick succession when having sex with Saeki in her apartment.[1] Even after climaxing, a futanari penis stays fully erect. It might not even be possible for it to go flaccid, instead retracting back into the clitoris as described above.
In some cases, the phallus is a temporary ability, created instead by consuming a magic concoction. This is the case with Kaori Saeki, who drinks a mixture of semen and blood from a spell infused golden chalice after her coven's virgin hunting quest. It causes not one but two near identical penises to sprout from her groin. She uses them to have sex with her friends, and are later never seen again.
Ejaculation and procreation
Futanari are able to produce both pre-ejaculate and large amounts of semen that looks identical to male ejaculate. The origin of this white fluid is unknown; the seminal vesicles and prostate gland that normally produce it in males could also be present in futanari due to some mutation, as females do not normally have these sex organs.
Due to the lack of testicles on futanari, the ejaculate presumably contains no sperm cells at all. Though futa witch Kitami does remark that one of her victims might get pregnant after she ejaculates inside her.[2] This could simply be a joke or attempt to intimidate the girl.
Years later, Jody Crowley intends to impregnate a young woman through the power of a demon vested inside her.[3] It is therefore possible that only the manifestation of a (presumably male) entity is what allows futanari to impregnate women, and not their own genetic material.
It is implied that futanari themselves ovulate and can become pregnant.[4] This would mean they still have ovaries and a uterus.
Trivia
- It is possible that Reika Kitami uses her penis to gauge if a girl is still a virgin, as the nurse concludes that student Mika Ito is no longer one after having sex with her. This suggests that vaginal intercourse with a futanari does not count as taking one's virginity and only male penetration would achieve this. However, it is likely Kitami already determined Ito was no longer a virgin prior to having sex with her, and simply indulged herself because it no longer mattered.
- Kitami also baptizes her victims to sway them into doing her bidding. This is described in the first game, where she urinates on Taki Minase using her regular (female) urethra. Later, she performs the act by ejaculating from her penis onto Kaori Saeki and her friends.[5][6]
- Futanari do not appear in the Origins prequel, the only Bible Black anime series where they are not seen in any form. However, Kitami could have canonically gained the ability to grow a penis at the end of the second episode after making a deal with the Devil.
- The term futanari is never spoken in the series. Kaori Saeki understandably calls it androgynous when first confronted with Reika Kitami's penis in the second episode.
