A date rape drug made of cellulose.

A paper doll or paper charm is a paper cut-out doll figure imbued with magic properties that can force one to instantly fall in love with another person. The usage of the prop is described in the Bible Black spell book. Its effects often result in a crazy obsession, overriding the target's natural inhibitions and sanity.

The charm is featured in the first Bible Black game, the first anime series Bible Black: La Noche de Walpurgis and its prequel Bible Black: Origins.

Usage and effects

Takashiro enchants the prop.

The instructions for the charm are described in the Bible Black.

First, the user writes the initial of the targeted person on the paper doll with their blood, then uses a magic incantation from the book:

"I charge thee in secret, in the name of the Almighty Adonai, to answer my liege's demands, that thy spirit shall enter this doll herewith. Elohi, Elohim, Elohei, Sabaoth, Elion, Ischiros, Adonai, Jah, Tetragrammaton, Sadai"
The charm slipped in Kozono's bag by her secret admirer Hiratani.

Afterwards, one hides the object somewhere near the target. When found, he or she will be affected as soon as they spot the sender. It will cause an intense love and sexual desire for him or her that seems to gradually grow more crazed to the point of desperation for more attention. The charm seemingly overrides the person's reason and inhibitions, making every concern secondary to gaining the sender's attention.

The spell does have limits, however:

  • Should the person the spell was used on have any genuine feelings toward the sender, then it is doubtful whether its effects will work.[1]
  • Since the spell essentially makes the target obsessed with the sender...
    • If the target's affection is not sufficiently and consistently returned by the person whom they were cursed to love or the target believes that the one whom they were cursed to love may love or be interested in someone else, then the target may attempt suicide.
    • If the target is betrayed by the one whom they were cursed to love (e.g. sleeping with someone else, watching them being raped and doing nothing to save them, or not caring whether they engage in sexual activity with someone else), then the target may seek vengeance against their lover typically by murder.

The effects of the charm can be nullified by a magic user by reciting the following to the afflicted target:

"Hainrou ira sabesu erimidaresi. Deriea adore. Yehoba iteyora madou dousi".

History

A lucky boy buys love from Rose Cross.

Love for sale

After discovering the Bible Black, Academy student Hiroko Takashiro and her witchcraft club friends Rie and Saki sell numerous paper dolls to their fellow students (and possibly teachers and others) in exchange for hefty sums of money. As a result, the club gains significant influence around the school.

Most notably, the girls use a doll to help the unpopular male student Hiratani win the love of the lesbian student council president Nami Kozono.

Kozono is released from the curse.

After Hiratani slips the charm in Kozono's bag, the girl becomes completely infatuated with the boy the moment she spots him the next day. She allows him to have sex with her any way he wants, and later even begs Takashiro to use her magic to make the boy love her more. Instead, Takashiro nullifies the spell in exchange for use of the school's basement.

As revenge for her abuse, Kozono has her thugs beat up Hiratani, and vows to get back at Takashiro, Rie and Saki as well.

Asada and Murai have to be separated.

An obsession gone awry

Twelve years later, student Taki Minase helps his classmate Ayumi Murai in her love life by making the boy Asada fall for her. Like before, the charm instantly takes effect, causing Asada to jump Murai and have sex with her in the school hallway despite his girlfriend being present.

Shiraki, affected by Minase's spell, desperately asks the boy to make love.

Minase later uses the charm himself on the popular student council president Rika Shiraki. The girl becomes totally obsessed with Minase and offers her body to him. She even visits him at home later.

Her crazed infatuation goes so far that she even attempts suicide by jumping off the school roof when she suspects Minase loves someone else. Later she tries to murder the boy for cheating on her and not helping her when she was raped right in front of him, but still vigorously makes love to him as he bleeds to death.

Takashiro, now an art professor allied to Minase, eventually wipes Shiraki's recent memories, nullifying the spell.

Trivia

  • A variation of the paper doll exists that causes a woman to dance naked, i.e. expose herself in public.
  • Seeing how all characters write the person's surname initial on the charm (Kozono, Asada, Shiraki), it is conceivable that this is part of the charm's function. However, it could also be that one simply has to visualize the person when writing the initial, similar to how the Death Note works from the popular manga series of the same name.
  • Though mostly used on female students, the charm also works on males, evidenced by Ayumi Murai successfully winning over Asada.
  • A doll is supposedly used on an unknown female tennis player during Rose Cross's rise to power. However, the effect of the charm is not clear, as the targeted girl does not seem to fall madly in love. She is instead sitting on the floor of the court as if taken ill or suffered an ankle injury.
